“why information and advice is not enough”

I think you all know someone who freely gives out advice.

Do this.

Do that.

Do this like that.

Do that like this.

This is the right way…

But the information, even if it’s great, often isn’t enough.

Many times, it’s information overload.

If you think about it, you have the whole history of information readily available in your pocket on your smartphone.

When you have the question, a quick Internet search can likely give you some pretty good answers (which is, by the way, how I fixed my own toilet the other day–it was doing a never-ending cycle and instead of calling a plumber I found a video by an info-plumber who helped me trouble shoot the problem in 5 minutes–honestly, I’ve never been prouder of myself)!

My point is, I don’t believe that a lack of information is what’s stopping you from getting the results you want.

For example, a quick search for how to have work-life balance will yield ideas like this:

1. Establish clear boundaries

2. Ask for help

3. Prioritize tasks while letting go of perfectionism

4. Schedule time for your well-being

5. Manage transitions between work and home, home and work

This is INFORMATION, while not providing any organization, support, or solving the problem for you.

So if you’re the type of person who gets overwhelmed from information and not knowing clearly what is the next right step, you would likely benefit from the organization of information into processes that actually help you.

Think about it–have you ever listened to an amazing podcast, felt inspired, but not know what you should do next to go in the direction you want to change?

In the next blog, I’ll show you how information can be organized to be more digestible and helpful.

Question: “Can you think of a time when you’ve had the information, but still struggled to know what to do next?”
