If you’re in the happy position to have a roof over your head (rented, mortgaged, or paid), a stable job, a stable income, and access to nutritious food, you’re ahead of 99% of people in this world.
But, I bet you are TIME POOR.
So we are going to talk about the rich ways to spend your precious time. And where better to start than what you love-to-do/have-to-do?
Love to Do | Hate to Do | |
Have to Do | Today’s topic! | |
Don’t Have to Do |
My list includes:
good quality sleep
meditation
making my bed
skincare routine
journalling (morning and night)
learning
reading
riding my bike
walking by the river (while listening to my favourite podcast)
creative work e.g. writing, photography
quality time with my kids, husband, family, and friends…
Your list will look different from mine. But you will see that my list includes some activities to support my physical and emotional health, strengthen my important relationships, and some way of giving back. You might notice that I didn’t put medicine on this list…to be fair, some days it is on this list and some days it’s not. As of this writing day, medicine will go on the next list–more on this later!
Now that you have your own list, what do you do?
In the ideal world, you would get everything on your love-to-do-list every day. But unless you have almost no responsibilities other than taking care of your own needs, you’ll have to get creative in making sure you put what you love into your day.
Maybe you do some activities three times weekly?
Or twice monthly?
Or spread the activity over a few months and reach a seasonal goal?
Maybe instead of going to the same old restaurant, you pair something you love to do with meeting a friend you haven’t seen in awhile?
Or learn a new hobby with your kids, rather than sitting on the sidelines watching them. Why should they have all the fun?
For those activities you want to aim to include daily, make it a ritual. This is your KEYSTONE ritual. This daily short-list of must-do activities will give you a daily boost of rejuventation and joy. This ritual will centre you, put you in a wonderfully strong and grounded centre, and boost you when you experience life’s challenges. So the next time your patient asks “when is the doctor going to see me?” you’ll be able to smile and say, “I’m right here and you have my full attention.”
