Stories brought me back to medicine. As doctors and mothers, we are in the business of stories. Stories connect us and tell us we belong. I hope you find some piece of yourself reflected in this community.

If you’ve followed this blog for any amount of time, you might be familiar with the idea of medicine +

Medicine plus motherhood.

Medicine plus photography.

Medicine plus writing.

Medicine plus coaching.

“But Dawn, I don’t have hobbies!”

No problem, everyone is different.

Medicine can be deeply fulfilling.

Motherhood can be deeply rewarding.

In both roles, you can learn every day and still not know everything. Both roles take a lot of time.

However, this is my argument for the +

It prevents burnout.

It’s essential to have something just for you. You do this “something” just because you love it. It can be the foundation for your great life, or it can enrich your life in ways that medicine and motherhood cannot.

When you have a piece of the day just for you, you invest in yourself.

When you invest in your physical/emotional/financial health, you can then

Invest in high-quality relationships, you can then

Give back when you are strong…

Isn’t that what a great life is all about?

So dust off those side passions and childhood dreams!

Maybe you don’t have a year-long sabbatical to explore side passions right now. But hey–neither did I!

For years, I chipped away at my dreams for one hour a week, one afternoon a month, or (if I was lucky) for a sustained few hours a week over a season. Chunks work well because, until you’re ready to commit a substantial amount of time, a mini test is a great way to try out your interests.

Question: “what’s one small thing you would love to explore in a micro-test?”
