Stories brought me back to medicine. As doctors and mothers, we are in the business of stories. Stories connect us and tell us we belong. I hope you find some piece of yourself reflected in this community.

When I was a medical student on team medicine, the attending, Dr. Rob Fowler said “people like Team Medicine…because everyone suffers together.”

Haha. Love it. And it’s so true. I remember ordering dinner for the team from Spring Rolls and sharing late night snacks with my fellow trainees…finishing our consults, learning some new content, and waiting for the hospital lights to change and signal the start of a new day. We had survived!

The evidence shows that communities are essential for supporting lasting change.

Do you want to change a bad habit?

Announce it to your family.

Post it on social.

Create an accountability group and get a star every time you check off your habit.

In other words, build a community to support your change.

But as you get older, you start to get really busy.

Maybe you start a family.

Maybe you move to a new city to start your practice.

Between rushing to get dinner on the table and signing your charts, it can be really hard to build a strong community of people who are trying to make their lives better.

And so when I realized how important it was to have a community, I decided to build it.

With this blog.

You’re my community. And I’m part of yours.

I’m grateful every day when I realize that I am not alone in wanting to change.

Question: “What are you looking for in your own community?”
